What's a UV Map? UV mapping is a means of texture mapping a 3D model. Given a texture (JPG, GIF, etc.) the UV map says 'this portion of the image goes here' and 'that goes there.' This UV mapping is generally done by your 3D modelling software, whether its 3D Studio MAX, Lightwave, Rhino, or whatever. However, these programs are generally limited in that if you make composite objects made up of smaller individually UV mapped pieces, the composite object's UV maps will all be super-imposed on top of each other. Or you could make a general UV map over the entire object, but it often doesn't get each piece mapped the way you like. This is where Mapping Magician takes over. Using the first approach, you go ahead and map each piece and export the model as an .OBJ file, even though all of the UV maps overlap. You then load up this .OBJ file in Mapping Magician and you can use it to rearrange the individual UV maps to make a single UV map for the entire object. You can scale each piece of the UV map according to how much detail you desire for that piece. I recommend running through the tutorial below to get started!
Download V1.2 This little utility program I wrote will generate template texture maps (like those on your Poser 3 CD-ROM in the Cool Stuff:Templates folder.) This version will let you actually edit the UV map, so you can build custom texture maps just like those Poser 3 uses.
